  9. It took two sets of parents to raise a total of 11 energetic cousins; especially the 9 rowdy boys around the La India Packing Company family business during the week, and at our ranches every weekend. Tio Abel and Tia Hilda served double-duty caring for all of us equally, imparting their wisdom as we grew, and occasionally applying just the right amount of discipline when we strayed 🙂 Throughout our youth, Tio Abel’s sharp intellect and skills truly inspired us. He would quickly pick-up on new technologies, and he would then patiently share that knowledge with us one-by-one. As he worked on a wide variety of technical problems with tools in hand, he would simultaneously share stories of life’s adventures with us; about ranching and the outdoors, about what it took to be a good man, and of the many struggles and victories in life. I learned more from Tio Abel and from my Dad than I did from several colleges or from my corporate careers. Tio truly shaped all 9 of us into sharp “Abel-bodied” men, and throughout a half a century or more of life together, all 9 of us still choose to spend our time emulating him as problem solvers, weekend ranchers, and good fathers. We all need more heroes like Tio Abel in our lives. Que en Paz Descanse, from Rene (and Dr. Sonia) Rodriguez
