Obituary

Gloria Hinojosa de De La Garza, age 97, was born on September 23, 1928, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, just before the Great Depression. She passed away peacefully in Laredo, Texas, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, where she lived most of her adult life and where she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family.

Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved spouse of 35 years, Alfonso “Poncho” De La Garza Cardenas. Her Parents Enrique Hinojosa Cisneros, Josefa Calzado de Hinojosa. Her siblings Irma Hinojosa de De La Garza, and Cesar Hinojosa Calzado.

She is survived by her children: Gloria De La Garza-Verazzi, Lourdes De La Garza (Juan Diego Serna), Patricia De La Garza (Robert Rogers), Alfonso De La Garza, Jr. (Eliza Rodriguez), and Gina De La Garza (Homer De La Garza).

She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Salome and Uriel Verazzi, Vanessa Gloria, Justin and Jason Rogers, Selika and Krisdian De La Garza, Don Dobie Jr. and Eric De La Garza, along with 14 great-grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and joy.

Gloria is also survived by her siblings: Enrique Hinojosa Calzado, Blanca Hinojosa de Cantù, and Aurora Hinojosa de Alonso, as well as countless nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her love and guidance.

Gloria devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, but her true passion was gardening. Her garden was her sanctuary — a place where she found peace, joy, and fulfillment. Having lived through a challenging and interesting childhood, she learned many skills early in life, including sewing and shooting, and grew into a woman who was strong, self-sufficient, and resilient.

She was a nurturer at heart, yet also a disciplinarian who believed in structure, responsibility, and doing things right. Gloria loved music and dancing, and she was known for her quick wit, sense of humor, and independent spirit. Her strength, warmth, and wisdom shaped generations, and her legacy will live on through the family she loved so deeply.
