Maria Catarina Aranda

Mrs. Maria Catarina Aranda, 92, was called to the Lord on Saturday, September 04, 2021, in Edinburg, Texas. A devout Catholic, Mrs. Aranda was an active and generous member of Holy Family Church and the church choir until she moved to Edinburg in 2020.Born in Laredo, Texas to Jose Torres and Candelaria Eguia Torres, she grew up taking care of her younger siblings. She followed the family as a migrant worker and later worked at various jobs in order to remain in the Laredo area to care for her parents and allow her sons to attend school regularly.Left to cherish her memory is her son, Jose Ortiz and his wife, Martha Sanchez Ortiz, and their two children, Dr. Joseph N. Ortiz (Lorena) and their twins and Catherine L. White (Jonathan) and their two children; her daughter-in-law, Norma Ortiz, and her two sons, Roger A., and Christopher J. Ortiz; a sister, Herminia Torres; and numerous nephews and nieces and their children.She was preceded in death not only by her parents, but also by her late husband, Simon Aranda, her youngest son Rogelio Ortiz, Jr.; brothers, Hilario Torres of California, and Juan Torres of Laredo; and her sisters, Francisca Miranda of Laredo, Clemencia Morado of Colorado, and Maria del Refugio Perez of Houston.Even into her later years, Little Grandma, as she was lovingly known by those close to her, was very independent and loved to hang out with her church friends, work on her garden, and pray. She will be truly missed by those who really knew her.

The family will receive condolences on Friday, September 10, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Aguero Funeral and Crematorium, 4402 E. Saunders St., Laredo, Texas 78041. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 6:00 p.m.Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. from Aguero Funeral and Crematorium to Holy Family Catholic Church for a Holy Mass at 9:30 a.m.Interment will be held at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.In accordance with CDC safety precautions, we ask everyone attending funeral services to wear a mask.
